Having postponed Counselling Week 2020 due to Covid-19, the School of Counselling (SOC) invites you to attend our lectures online for FREE from 22-26 Feb at Singapore Bible College. The Faculty and some friends of SOC will be giving lectures and sharing their insights on current issues, counselling concepts, approaches and skills. This is our way of celebrating the Lord¡¯s faithfulness and reaching out to the wider community of churches and seminaries in Asia.

The Sexual Revolution in the 1960s ushered widespread changes in attitudes and behaviour toward pre-marital sex, cohabitation, abortion, pornography, homosexuality and a host of other matters pertaining to sexuality. How can the Church respond to these with respect to re-articulating the biblical view of sex as truly ¡°Good News¡± and in ¡®bringing every thought captive to Christ¡¯ as we challenge the powerful in-roads of ¡®expressive individualism¡¯? Joseph John will explore this question as he draws from years of counselling individuals struggling with gender issues and grappled with the current challenges on sexuality.

The lecture will look into the issue of dominance and abuse versus submission and love in marriage. The presentation will hopefully help the audience to differentiate how power in marriage can be used for a meaningful and peaceful journey of a couple.?

Shame is a core emotion of the self, but can destroy one's identity and relationships when it becomes toxic. This talk gives an overview of healthy and toxic shame, its origins, identifying it in ourselves or in relationships, and some basic ways in responding to toxic shame.

The current pandemic and all its pains has driven us into coping mechanisms that include addiction to things like the digital gadgets. Addiction to social media has become popular. More so, pornography and its effects on the human brain brings deeper effects in human relationships. This session will attempt to give some light into how we can face digital and pornography addiction.

Counsellors and counsellees come together with their own values, spirituality and worldview. This session will explore challenges and complexities in the therapeutic and ethical process. Adrian will address tough questions that counsellors ask and encounter with his own experience as a pastor-counsellor.

This lecture will cover parenting issues from the pregnancy stage to empty nest. Issues addressed include discipline, emotional-bonding, faith-integration, healthy boundaries, behavioural issues, parenting styles, insights into family counselling and Christian worldview of parenting in the world today.

More Christians are seeking spiritual direction for their lives. Many are seeking training and certification to call themselves spiritual directors. This talk examines the relationship between charism (gifting), calling and certification. What inherently is spiritual direction about? Is a clear sense of calling from God a must? What are the importance and potential pitfalls of certification?

This session will focus on introducing a highly mobile and cross-cultural population who are also known as the ¡®Citizens of everywhere and nowhere¡¯. Videos and stories of TCKs will be shared to explain their characteristic challenges and gifts, including their issues of hidden losses and disenfranchised grief, trauma from multiple relocations, and struggles as hidden immigrants.
