Dr. Tremper Longman III (B.A. Ohio Wesleyan University; M.Div. Westminster Theological Seminary; M.Phil. and Ph.D. Yale University) is Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Westmont College. He has written over 30 books including commentaries on Genesis, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Daniel, and Nahum. His most recent book is Confronting Old Testament Controversies: Pressings Questions about Evolution, Sexuality, History, and Violence (Baker). His books have been translated into seventeen different languages. He is one of the main translators of the popular New Living Translation of the Bible. Tremper and Alice currently reside in Alexandria, VA and have three sons (Tremper IV, Timothy, Andrew) and six granddaughters.
Philip Satterthwaite [pronounced: SAT-EARTH-WEIGHT] is an Englishman who has lived in Singapore for 20 years. He has served as Lecturer in Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew and more recently as Principal at the Biblical Graduate School of Theology. He worships at Prinsep Street Presbyterian Church, and is married to Eileen.

The book of Job is often thought to be a book about suffering, but really it is a book about wisdom in relationship to suffering. We will talk about preaching Job with an idea on both the themes of wisdom and suffering and their connection. We don’t learn much from the book about why we suffer, but we do learn a lot about how God wants us to respond to our suffering as Job moves from complaint to lament to trust. We will also show connection to the same dynamic in the book of Psalms and Lamentations before turning to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as an example of faithful response to suffering.

Ever since 9/11 Christians in the West have been sensitive to descriptions of God acting violently toward his human creatures. Many contemporary Christians find the stories of Noah’s flood, the conquest of Jericho, and other similar accounts of divine violence disturbing. God’s command to “completely annihilate” (herem) the Canaanites troubles many. Reactions to these descriptions have led many scholars today (Enns and Siebert in particular) to provide other explanations or to suggest that the picture of God we get in the Old Testament is out of keeping with the ethics of Jesus. They, therefore, conclude that the God of the text is not the same as the real God. Over against these viewpoints, I will show how the Bible, Old and New Testaments, provide a coherent picture of God’s fight against evil from the Fall until the Consummation.
