Spiritual Formation & Chaplaincy
Equipping students for Christ-like leadership through holistic spiritual formation that integrates faith, character, and service for enduring ministry.

The Importance of Spiritual Formation at Singapore Bible College (SBC)

At Singapore Bible College (SBC), we believe that becoming a Christ-like leader involves more than just gaining biblical knowledge. It requires a holistic approach to personal and spiritual growth that shapes the mind, heart, and hands. Spiritual formation is central to our mission because we understand that preparing students for long-term ministry demands more than academic rigour; it requires deep spiritual roots. By integrating spiritual growth into every aspect of their education, we aim to equip students not only with knowledge but also with Christ-like character and practical ministry skills, enabling them to serve faithfully even in the face of challenges.

Why Spiritual Formation Matters

Ministry is demanding, often requiring emotional strength, resilience, and spiritual maturity. Without a strong spiritual foundation, it can be difficult to navigate the complexities of serving others while staying grounded in Christ. At SBC, we believe that spiritual formation—rooted in biblical values and Christ-like character—is what empowers our students to thrive in ministry. This holistic approach nurtures both the internal and external aspects of Christian leadership, helping students develop the endurance needed to serve for the long term.

Shaping the Head, Heart, and Hands

At SBC, we are intentional about shaping our students in three key dimensions—head, heart, and hands:

  • Head (Thinking): We ensure that our students’ minds are deeply rooted in biblical understanding. Scripture is the foundation for every aspect of their education, guiding them to think critically and theologically about life and ministry. This biblical foundation prepares them to navigate complex theological, ethical, and societal issues with wisdom and clarity.
  • Heart (Being): Spiritual formation at SBC fosters Christ-like character. We cultivate emotional and spiritual maturity by encouraging students to develop humility, authenticity, and resilience. Through intentional self-reflection and mentorship facilitated by our Pastoral Care Groups and individual Spiritual Direction when needed, students learn to align their internal values with God and their outward actions, growing in Christ-likeness as they prepare for ministry.
  • Hands (Doing): Faith without action is incomplete. At SBC, we provide practical experiences that equip students to live out their faith through service and ministry. Whether in the classroom, communal living, or participating in local or overseas mission fields, students are taught to apply what they’ve learned to real-world contexts, serving others with integrity and grace.

Nurturing Christ-like Character for Endurance

At the heart of SBC’s spiritual formation program are five core values: perseverance, authenticity, resilience,? integrity and humility. These values are essential for effective ministry, helping students bridge the gap between their aspirations and daily actions. By emphasising these traits, we ensure that our students are not only spiritually grounded but also equipped to face the relational and emotional challenges that arise in ministry.

These core values are cultivated through formal, non-formal, and informal spiritual formation activities. Whether in structured academic settings, during retreats and group discussions, or in spontaneous moments of fellowship, students are given opportunities to grow in these values. Over time, they develop the social and emotional competencies necessary to serve for the long haul, such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and relationship management.

Chaplaincy

E-Chaplain: Rev. Dr. Andrew Hwang

The Chaplaincy at Singapore Bible College is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to students engaged in online studies. Recognising the unique challenges and opportunities that come with studying remotely, the chaplain serves as a vital resource for students as they pursue their academic and spiritual goals from their home countries.

Through regular check-ins, the chaplain follows up on students’ academic progress, ensuring they have the support they need to succeed in their studies. Beyond academics, the chaplain is committed to nurturing each student’s spiritual growth, offering personalised guidance and encouragement to deepen their relationship with God.

For students facing challenges—whether personal, academic, or spiritual—the chaplain is available for counselling and pastoral care, providing a compassionate and confidential space where they can openly share their concerns. The chaplaincy’s mission is to help online students feel connected, encouraged, and spiritually grounded, equipping them to thrive in their studies and ministry journey.
