COUNSELLING WEEK
WELCOME TO THE OPEN HOUSE OF
THE SCHOOL OF COUNSELLING
(ENGLISH PROGRAMME)
19–23 FEBRUARY 2024
The School of Counselling (English) at Singapore Bible College invites you to attend our lectures online for free from 19-23 February, Singapore time. The Faculty and some friends of the School of Counselling will be giving lectures and sharing their insights on current issues, as well as counselling concepts, approaches and skills. A freewill offering will be collected during the event.
Confidentiality is a crucial ingredient that creates a safe space for counselling. Yet, for the safety of both client and counsellor, confidentiality is not absolute and this is where things can become muddy due to varying expectations or misunderstandings. This is none more evident than in the local church where we often have multiple roles and straddle across dual relationships — not to mention the myriad of unspoken expectations about how confidentiality should work across different groups of people in the church! Come explore and consider the various factors which shape the way we think about confidentiality in Church Counselling.
A pastor at Yio Chu Kang Chapel, father to 3 boys and a Counsellor by training (Singapore Bible College), Adrian had no idea what God was having in store for him when he obeyed God’s call for him to full-time paid ministry in 2012! Three key phrases guide his discipleship walk – “In Christ Alone”, “In the Light of Eternity” & “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION: 12 FEB 2024
Counsellors offering marital counselling need to appreciate the role played by the gender of each of their clients. Beyond the overt biological differences, how it impacts their communication, the emotions they experience, and their expression of intimacy. These three areas have brought much grief to couples, and counsellors will do well to know how to provide counsel, training and support. Counsellors also need to be aware of how their gender impacts the direction of counselling.
Mr Benny Bong is a Family and Marital therapist with about 40 years of experience. Besides the Singapore Bible College where he teaches counselling courses, he also teaches in institutions like The National University of Singapore and the Singapore University of Social Science and training bodies like the Social Science Institute and The Family Resource and Training Centre. An area of professional interest is in the area of ending domestic violence. About 30 years ago, he helped form the Society Against Family Violence. Amongst its achievements is the completion of the Violence Against Women’s Survey: The Singapore Report in 2014. For his contribution to the community, Benny has been awarded the Friend of MCYS in 2007 and the AWARE Hero award by SCWO 2011.
