Dear Fellow Alumni,
We are in the season of Lent. I thank God that Lent is included in the Church calendar for Christians around the world to take a deep hard look at ourselves, in the light of God’s great love for mankind, and the sufferings that Christ underwent for our salvation. Isaac Watts tells this most succinctly in his hymn, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross:
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it Lord that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God,
All the vain things that charmed me most,
I sacrifice them through his blood.
See from his head, his hands and feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down,
Did e’er such love and sorry meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small,
Love so amazing, so divine,?
Demands my soul, my life, my all.?
As we continue to reflect on the love of God and how Jesus demonstrated the full extent of God’s love on the cross, may our hearts palpitate with deep gratitude to our Father-God and to his beloved Son, Jesus, our Saviour.?
Let’s not be in too great a hurry to rush and celebrate Easter but let’s tread slowly and reflectively on the last weeks of Jesus prior to the cross, culminating with his journey on the via Dolorosa, (the way of suffering). But he chose to walk that road out of his love for you and me….all the way to Calvary.
Spend some time reading the accounts in the Gospels of the last weeks of Jesus before he went to the cross. Also listen to the rendition of the Via Dolorosa by Sandy Patty. May the Lord speak to our hearts in a fresh and powerful way this Lent.
