Reconciliation is at the core of the biblical message. It’s not only between us and God, between neighbours, but also between groups of individuals such as nations. It involves facing the past, even painful past, by both perpetrators and victims, and both parties need to agree about the basic facts of history. Then one party needs to admit guilt and ask for forgiveness. Unless in the presence of a god of justice, not just a god of love, the whole affair threatens to degenerate into a farce of cheap grace.
