Renewing the SBC Library

The SBC Library has waited long for its renovation; discussions on how to revamp the two-storey space as one of several Communal Learning Spaces on campus began as early as 2017. In February 2023, the project finally launched when we awarded it to SA Chua Architects. We are currently at the first phase of the project, where designs are developed and prepared for approval. The second and third phases of the project (submissions and tender) will continue through to early next year, with the most exciting final phase (construction) scheduled to begin in June 2024 and will take six months.

The renewed space

An entire floor of the renovated Library will be reconfigured for individual and group study spaces, flexible areas for discussions, lectures, and presentations. Our multimedia rooms will also double as seminar rooms, workshop spaces, and immersive technology labs. More than ever, post-COVID, we value conversations that go deeper than the surface of printed pages and Zoom screens. Through this renovation, the SBC Library recommits itself to be the ‘third space’ for spiritual introspection, theological curiosity, and intellectual humility.

The renewed heart

When the Library renovation team considered the purpose and programme of the project, the scale was something we wrestled with. We wanted to be bold in exercising our imagination and faithful in using the support we were blessed with to start the project. Even though our discussion continues to revolve around cost and utility, we remember that this project belongs to God, who in propelling us to renew our space, is also prompting us to renew our vision for holistic theological education. Through this ongoing journey, I have been reminded to contemplate areas of my heart in need of renovation and to take the time to examine the foundations as I declutter, rebuild, and recommit.

The renewed vision

As our academic landscape continues to be influenced by artificial intelligence and data-driven processes, and as educators keep disinformation and post-truth politics at bay, the Library serves as a way station for navigating emerging media, cultures, and technologies. Through our resources and services, we ensure digital literacies for our learning community, encourage spiritual dialogue for strengthening our faith, and enlarge our theological competence in our interactions.

We need your support to renew the SBC Library space, services, and collections. We invite you to partner with us to remake the SBC Library as the vital heart of our campus. Your contribution supports the education and well-being of our shepherds in training!
